Illuminating the neural mechanisms of emotion and memory

Biography

Jie Zheng is a computational neuroscientist, who applies mathematical models to understand brain functions. She graduated from UCI in 2018 with her Ph.D. degree in Biomedical Engineering. During her Ph.D., she studied neural dynamics underpinning emotional memory processing using intracranial electrode recordings in humans. Now she continues her research at Harvard University by incorporating neural signatures from human single unit recordings. Her ultimate goal is to develop new therapies for memory deficits and neuropsychiatric disorders by combining these mechanistic insights with stimulation-based interventions.

Why is science communication important to you?

I love sharing. So why not science? I think science should belong to everyone instead of researchers’ own “hobby”. Science itself is fun. Sometimes we just need a bit of imagination and humor to break down these complicated ideas for a new audience.
